BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY LITERACY: A STUDY ON EFFECTIVE TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Abstract

This study investigates effective teaching strategies for promoting sustainability literacy in educational settings. With environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion becoming more urgent, it is crucial for students to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to contribute to a sustainable future. This research examines various pedagogical approaches that can be utilized to enhance students' understanding of sustainability concepts and practices. Among the strategies explored are experiential learning, inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and the integration of sustainability into existing curricula across disciplines. The study also highlights the importance of fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in students to enable them to tackle complex environmental challenges. Data was gathered from interviews with educators, classroom observations, and student feedback to assess the effectiveness of these strategies in promoting sustainability literacy. The findings suggest that active, student-centered learning approaches combined with real-world applications are particularly effective in engaging students and deepening their understanding of sustainability. The research concludes with recommendations for educators on how to best integrate sustainability into their teaching practices, and how schools and institutions can support the development of sustainability literacy among students.
