INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY INTO K-12 CURRICULA: APPROACHES AND CHALLENGES IN PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

This paper examines the integration of sustainability into K-12 curricula and explores the approaches and challenges in promoting environmental awareness among young learners. The increasing urgency of addressing environmental issues, such as climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss, has made it crucial for educational systems to incorporate sustainability education. This study reviews various models and strategies for integrating sustainability into different subject areas, from science and social studies to language arts and mathematics, highlighting how these approaches help foster environmental consciousness. It also identifies the challenges educators face, such as a lack of training, insufficient resources, and resistance to curriculum changes. The paper explores the role of hands-on learning, experiential activities, and collaboration with local communities in promoting environmental stewardship. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of teacher professional development and curriculum adaptation to ensure that sustainability education is both effective and engaging. Through case studies and a review of existing literature, this research aims to provide insights into how schools can overcome barriers and successfully integrate sustainability education into their teaching practices, ultimately shaping a generation of environmentally responsible citizens.
