Community-Engaged Learning for Sustainability: Schools as Hubs for Local Environmental Action

Community-engaged learning (CEL) offers a dynamic approach to sustainability education by transforming schools into active hubs for local environmental action. This study investigates the integration of CEL strategies into school programs to promote collaboration between students, educators, and community members in addressing environmental challenges. Drawing on case studies and participatory research, the paper highlights the mutual benefits of CEL, including enhanced student learning, strengthened community ties, and tangible environmental improvements. Examples include student-led conservation projects, waste management campaigns, and initiatives to restore local ecosystems. Challenges, such as coordinating diverse stakeholders and ensuring project sustainability, are also examined. The findings underscore the potential of schools to act as catalysts for community-wide environmental stewardship, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and empowering students to become active change-makers. Recommendations for effectively implementing CEL for sustainability in educational settings are provided.
