CURRICULUM DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY: TEACHING CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This paper examines the integration of sustainability principles into higher education curricula, with a focus on teaching climate change and environmental justice. In response to growing global environmental challenges, higher education institutions have a responsibility to prepare students to become informed and proactive citizens. This study explores innovative curriculum design strategies that incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change and promote environmental justice. Key components include fostering critical thinking, promoting social equity, and integrating experiential learning opportunities such as fieldwork and community-based projects. Case studies from universities implementing such curricula are analyzed to evaluate their effectiveness in achieving learning outcomes related to sustainability. The findings underscore the importance of aligning curricular goals with global sustainability targets, leveraging technology for inclusive learning, and creating partnerships with local communities to contextualize environmental justice issues. The paper concludes with actionable recommendations for educators and policymakers to design and implement courses that empower students to tackle climate challenges and advocate for equitable solutions.
