Abstract

This paper investigates the significant roles that tertiary institutions in Nigeria play in advancing Green Campus initiatives, fostering Green Communities, and enhancing Environmental Sustainability. As a position paper, it draws on secondary data from government documents, print resources, and online publications. Content analysis was employed to focus the literature on the study's main themes. The research highlights several key functions of tertiary institutions, including their contributions through teaching, research, community service related to sustainable practices, and the creation of centers dedicated to environmental studies. The paper emphasizes the crucial role that these institutions can have in combating climate change and promoting sustainability. It recommends that both government bodies and international organizations actively involve tertiary institutions in programs and strategies at local, state, national, and international levels. This engagement is essential for effective carbon reduction and environmental stewardship. By harnessing their capabilities, tertiary institutions can drive significant progress towards developing sustainable and environmentally conscious communities
